in other words, what would an 18-55mm lens be used for
and what does the 18-55 represent in lens terms (zoom-macro) etc

    It mostly depends on the medium you're shooting with. If you are working with Digital, 18-55mm will be somewhat wide angle to somewhat telephoto - sort of like a 35-90mm using 35mm film. If you are working with 35mm film, it will be very wide angle to just above normal.

    The term Macro is talking about the closest focusing distance, usually a foot or less.
