Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Lens Review Creativity Tricks, achieving the blurred water effect

I have a 17-55mm EF-S 2.8 Lens and use it with a canon 40D so it becomes 28-88mm. If I shoot at 88 with 2.8 how do I get the subject in Sharp focus? And how far should the subject be from the background?

what other lens would you reccomend?

Probably the only one lens out there that Canon has to offer with the best "bookeh" is the EF 50mm f/1.2L. That sucker'll set you back a grand or two but it's all worth it.
